Saskia Ooms: Painters and Cameras: Exploring New Ways of Looking around 1900

22,95

Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography, vol 11.

By the invention of simple hand cameras around 1885 a revolution in photography took place. Artists like Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Edouard Vuillard and in the Netherlands George Hendrik Breitner and Willem Witsen use this new, simple photography. They took photographs as a preliminary study or memory support for their paintings, but also to record intimate family scenes. Their artist’s background was not denied. In this study, a number of French and Dutch painters-photographers are compared for the first time and their work is placed in a broader context.
