Rakia Faber: Louis Heldring: Amateur Photographer in the Middle East
Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography, vol 3.
On Sinterklaas evening, 1901, Louis Heldring gave his three children a special edition of his book ‘Travel Impressions in the East’. These books had blank pages on which he pasted the photographs he had taken during his trip to the Middle East in 1898. Originally his book was a modest travel report, but these three special gifts are gems of early amateur photography, in two parts. Through the combination of text and photographs Rakia Faber can reconstruct how an amateur photographer experienced and recorded such a journey.
