Popel Coumou: Untitled

‘Spaces are closely connected to emotions. Consciously and subconsciously people are aware of the borders that confine them and what lies beyond. It is why solitary confinement is seen as one of the harshest punishments that can be dealt. To take away ones vista is to take away the promise of an open space; of freedom and possibilities. It is also why standing al the edge of the ocean, on top of a hill or in front of a window that offers a majestic view brings such an immense sense of relief.’

That is how Emiel van der Pol begins his introduction on the work of Popel Coumou in this book. She is a Dutch photographer, he goes on, ‘who succeeds in pinpointing these kinds of slowly elevating viewing experiences.’
