Paulien Oltheten: Non
Visual artist Paulien Oltheten presents a work in book form, inspired by a graffito found in the Les Olympiades area (13th arrondissement) in Paris. The area appealed to her because of its lively social dynamics set against the backdrop of utopian modernist architecture from the 1960s. The book consists of a series of photographs of people walking past the roughly spray-painted word “non” (no), as well as an audio transcript in which the random passers-by give the word new meanings. With her camera and microphone, Oltheten playfully explores what happens when this compact statement is taken from a concrete wall and allowed to travel freely between the social and the political.
