Laetitia Dujardin: Ethnics and Trade
Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography, vol 2.
In the 19th century, Western views about distant peoples and cultures were very different than today. This was also expressed in photography. In 1883 a colonial exhibition was organized in Amsterdam, through which people became acquainted with non-Western peoples, cultures and products. Laetitia Dujardin describes in this fascinating book what the role of photography has been in our views on and attitude towards foreign peoples. She demonstrates that photography was an instrument for colonial politics.
