Femke Speelberg: Scraps of Inspiration: Photographs and Graphics in a Designer’s Album, 1870-1905
Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography, vol 10.
Books, magazines and photographs inspire designers in their work. Sometimes such a process is visible when the artist has created a scrapbook or folder. This method is of all times. However, a complete scrapbook from the nineteenth century is very exceptional. It offers us a unique look over the designer’s shoulder. He collected photographs, drawings and prints, edited them, combined them and kept them in his album with the inscription Ornamentation Renaissance. Femke Speelberg shows us how the designer was inspired and she places the album in an art-historical context. The name of the owner is nowhere in the book, but his identity is revealed.
