Rein Jelle Terpstra: Dark Dunes
The photo book Dark Dunes is about a passionate amateur photographer who took his best pictures during the occupation years. As a photographer he was meticulously involved in the medium of photography. In the margins of his negatives he describes not only the shutter speed and the aperture, but also the hour of the day, the weather type and, like a crack in the idyll, the year: almost all between 1940 – 1945. He photographed only the photogenic: vistas, picturesque scenes, still lifes and sometimes the sky. A photographer who looks through the lens but doesn’t see the time and the world he lives in. This collection shows how a photo can disguise reality rather than reveal it, escapist rather than engaged.
