Makoto Azuma and Shunsuke Shiinoki: Encyclopedia of Flowers IV

The fourth book featuring works by master Japanese flower artist and botanical sculptor Makoto Azuma, this edition adds five new series to the ones established in previous editions: Earth, Horizon, Ambiguity, Torus, and Matrix.

Filled with Shunsuke Shiinoki’s breathtaking photographs of flowers and botanical displays, the book celebrates nature’s diversity and beauty, as well as the poignant, temporal notion of a plant in bloom.

It gives an overview of Azuma’s numerous experiments in presentation and new compositions, with hopes that flowers might be seen as a kind of prayer that goes beyond national and religious boundaries, transcending sex, race, and ethnicity.

Japanese floral artist Makoto Azuma held his first overseas solo show in New York and continues to exhibit highly experimental works primarily in Europe. In 2009 he established the Azuma Makoto Kaju Kenkyujo (AMKK) botanical lab, through which he conducts projects around the world as part of his unique pursuit of plants and their beauty.

Shunsuke Shiinoki began botanical photography at the same time that Azuma embarked on his artistic career. In partnership with Azuma, he focuses on capturing the forms of life as they shift in aspect from moment to moment.
