Artist talk Aaron Schuman on ‘SLANT’
Last year American photographer, writer and curator Aaron Schuman surprised the photo world with the innovative publication SLANT. In this book Schuman mixes police reports from a local newspaper and suggestive photos into a portrait of Amherst, a small town in Massachusetts, resulting in multi-layered, impressionistic storytelling. PhotoQ Bookshop is happy to organise an artist talk by Schuman on Monday 3 February 2020 at Warehouse de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
What began as a genuinely affectionate, tongue-in-cheek take on the small towns where Schuman spent his childhood steadily came to reflect the disquieting rise of “fake news”, “alternative facts”, “post-truth” politics and paranoia in America following the 2016 election. In SLANT, the relationship that has been constructed between photography and text takes its inspiration from a poetic scheme called ‘slant rhyme’, notably espoused by the 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, who also happened to live and write in Amherst.
SLANT – published by MACK – was cited as one of 2019’s “Best Photobooks” by numerous photographers, critics and publications, including The Guardian, Internazionale, American Suburb X, Photoeye (Jason Fulford / Rebecca Norris Webb), Photobookstore Magazine (Vanessa Winship / Mark Power/ Robin Titchener). Reviews called the book ‘a kind of visual poetry’ (Poetry Foundation), humorous (…) thought-provoking’ (British Journal of Photography) and ‘fascinating’ (De Standaard).
This evening Aaron Schuman will talk about all the aspects of SLANT. The event is set up in collaboration with PhotoQ Bookshop, since last year part of World Press Photo House. After the talk you can buy the book and the photographer will be happy to sign.
